35 Kitchen Cabinet Colors That Will Stand the Test of Time

Interior Painting: Necessary Steps to Ensure Success

1. Prepare The Room

  • Clear the room of furniture, decorations, and other items. If you can't remove everything, move them to the center of the room and cover them with drop cloths or plastic sheets to protect them from paint splatters.
  • Remove any wall fixtures, such as light switch covers, electrical outlet plates, and picture frames.
  • Lay down drop cloths or plastic sheets to protect the floor from paint spills or drips.

2. Prepare the Walls

  • Inspect the walls for any cracks, holes, or imperfections. Fill these with spackle or putty, and let them dry. Sand the patched areas to ensure a smooth surface.
  • Clean the walls to remove dirt, dust, and grease. Use a mild detergent solution and a sponge or cloth to wipe down the walls. Rinse with clean water and let them dry completely..

3. Protect The Trim

  • Apply painter's tape along the edges of the walls, where they meet the ceiling, baseboards, and any trim or molding. This will help create clean, straight lines and protect the areas you don't want to paint.
  • Use a putty knife or a flat edge to press the tape firmly and ensure it adheres well.

3. Prime The Walls (Optional)

  • If you're painting over a dark or heavily stained wall, or if you're changing the color drastically, applying a primer coat can help improve paint coverage and adhesion. Follow the instructions on the primer can for application and drying times.

4. Paint The Walls

  • Stir the paint thoroughly with a paint stirrer to ensure an even consistency.
  • If using a roller, pour paint into a paint tray. If using a brush, pour paint into a paint bucket or use a smaller container.
  • Start by "cutting in" the edges of the walls with a brush. Paint a strip about 2-3 inches wide along the tape and in the corners where a roller might not reach.
  • Use a roller to paint the larger areas of the walls. Dip the roller into the paint tray and roll it back and forth to distribute the paint evenly on the roller. Apply the paint in a "W" or "M" pattern, covering a manageable section of the wall at a time.
  • Apply the paint using even pressure, maintaining a wet edge as you move from one section to another. This will help avoid visible brush or roller marks.
  • Allow the first coat to dry completely as per the paint manufacturer's instructions. Apply additional coats as needed for full coverage. Typically, two coats are sufficient.

4. Remove The Painters Tape

  • Once the paint is dry to the touch, carefully remove the painter's tape at a 45-degree angle to ensure clean lines. If the paint is still wet, wait until it dries before removing the tape.

5. Clean Up

  • Clean your brushes, rollers, and paint trays according to the paint manufacturer's instructions. Dispose of any leftover paint or empty paint cans properly, following local regulations.
  • Remove drop cloths or plastic sheets, and put furniture and decorations back in place once the paint is fully dry.
